Veterans “Stand Down” –Resources for All Veterans
Reminiscent of safe-havens for soldiers in the Vietnam War, the largest veterans event in the Western New York area, Veterans “Stand Down” will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. The Stand Down will link and provide veterans with a wealth of resources in one convenient location.
This event will connect homeless and veterans at risk of being homeless with information and services to include immediate housing, legal advice and services. All veterans can obtain information about VA health care and other Veterans benefits information, education, free haircuts, social and family services and more. Employers will also be on site ready to interview and hire. Veterans should bring a copy of DD-214 discharge papers or military ID and a resume if interested in employment. New this year, an entire area for women veterans, free preventive pet care, Food Bank of WNY mobile food truck and NFTA job bus.
“Each year we offer more resources to veterans who attend Stand Down,” said Kristen Weese, LCSW, VA Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program Manager. “Bringing providers from the community and Veterans Affairs together in one place for the Stand Down is a great opportunity for Veterans to learn about benefits and resources.”
Free lunch and giveaways are offered to veterans who attend. VA Western New York Healthcare System and community partners sponsoring this event include, The Veterans One-stop Center (VOC) of Western New York, United Healthcare, KeyBank Center, Buffalo Sabres, Pegula Sports and Entertainment, La Nova, Western New York Veterans Housing Coalition, and Resurrection Life.
