VA2K Walk & Roll VA Western New York Healthcare System wellness event to help homeless veterans
BUFFALO and BATAVIA, NEW YORK-On May 16, the 8th annual “VA2K Walk & Roll” event will be held at VA locations across the country. Local events will be run from 11am to 1pm at both VA Western New York Healthcare System’s two major VA medical centers located at 3495 Bailey Avenue in Buffalo, and 222 Richmond Avenue in Batavia, New York. In Buffalo, walk begins in Veterans Park by Bailey Avenue entrance and in Batavia, at the patio by Building 4.
Last year’s “VA2K Walk & Roll” event was a big success with more than 22,600 VA employees participating at 200 VA locations across the country. The VA2K encourages VA employees to adopt an active lifestyle by providing the opportunity to enjoy a short two-kilometer (approximately 1.2 miles) walk that can be started anytime within 11am-12:45pm. This walk can be completed in about 20 minutes with the community invited to participate.
VA2K also helps homeless and at risk veterans. Participants are asked to bring donations in the form of items such as T-Shirts, socks, underwear, new clothing (LG-XXL), toilet paper, paper towels, full-sized personal hygiene items, household cleaning supplies, and laundry detergent . After collecting these items, they are distributed to Western New York at risk veterans. Donations are completely voluntary and are not required in order to participate. Music will be offered by Musician Medics at both of the events.
Since 2011, in-kind donations nationally generated more than $2 million in value to help homeless Veterans. “The VA2K Walk & Roll is one of the ways we encourage our staff to adopt healthy lifestyles. It’s also a great way for them to help homeless and at risk Veterans,” said Michael J. Swartz, Interim Healthcare System Director. Community groups who are interested in participating in the event should contact the local VA2K coordinators; Paul Seyfried at 716-862-8803 (Buffalo) and Rebecca Hodgins-Ball at 585-409-9324.
