VA Western New York Healthcare System

Honored as a leader in health care environmentally preferable practices

VA Western New York Healthcare System (VAWNYHS) at Buffalo is the recipient of Practice Greenhealth “Partner for Change” and “Circle of Excellence” Awards for 2015.  Practice Greenhealth is a national health care community dedicated to transforming health care worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint while increasing sustainability. These honors are among the organization’s Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to recognize outstanding environmental achievements in the health care sector.

The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste-source reduction, and recycling programs. Facilities applying for this award must recycle at least 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, be well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs.  Additionally, the facility has implemented a nationally recognized program to recycle platinum from its cardiac catheters and organized successful community recycling events for electronics.

The Circle of Excellence Award recognizes the hospital’s outstanding energy program.  The award highlights hospitals that are pushing the envelope and driving innovation in the energy efficiency area.  Only 10 facilities receive this award nationally.  Specifically, the facility has made improvements in maximizing boiler and chiller plant operational efficiency, full utilization of the Building Automation System (BAS) and implemented advanced energy metering and steam distribution monitoring programs to improve energy efficiency.

“As a Partner for Change and Circle of Excellence Awards winner, we are committed to improving environmental health for our patients, staff, and community as a whole,” said Donald Johnson, Green Environmental Systems (GEMS) Coordinator for VAWNYHS. “These awards represent the daily efforts and dedication of our staff that directly support these programs.  We look forward to continuing to improve and make these efforts a priority.”

The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards were presented on May 19 at the CleanMed Conference in Dallas, TX.
