VA Western New York Healthcare System Honors Vietnam War Veterans

VA Western New York Healthcare System recognized Vietnam War era Veterans from all branches of services through Vietnam Lapel Pin and Presidential Proclamation issuing ceremonies held at VA clinics events in Dunkirk, Jamestown, and Allegany American Legion. Additional recognition events were sponsored by Congressional reps at The Matthew Glab American Legion Post in Lackawanna and America Legion Post in Hamburg, New York. At these recognition events, over 275 Western New York area Vietnam era Veterans received an official welcome home.

Many Vietnam era Veterans did not receive a proper welcome home after returning from their military duties, whether from the Republic of Vietnam itself, or other assignment around the world. Too often, Vietnam Veterans were shunned and unwelcomed by Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs). As a result, they started their own VSO, Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), advocating to improve Vietnam Veterans’ health issues from exposure to Agent Orange and advocating for other earned benefits. VVA members also committed themselves in making sure that no future returning Veterans would be treated in such a despicable manner. Today, because of their efforts, Veterans returning home receive a much warmer welcome home.

Fast forward to 2012, when The Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Committee started to officially recognize Vietnam era Veterans on a national level through a Presidential Proclamation signed by President Obama. Additional commemorations were held on March 29, a day to be reserved as Vietnam War Veterans Day by President Trump’s Proclamation, up until the year 2025.
