VA Western New York Healthcare System Updates During COVID-19 Pandemic

Limited dosages of the COVID-19 vaccine have arrived at VA Western New York Healthcare System. We are following a Veteran Health Administration distribution plan to efficiently vaccinate our healthcare personnel and our most vulnerable Veteran patients in a timely manner. Veterans residing at our community living centers have just recently received the first of two doses of the Pfizer produced vaccine. When more of the vaccine becomes available in the coming weeks and months, Veterans will be notified and scheduled.

To ensure a safe environment for all who enter our facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, here are some guidelines Veterans should follow when they seek health care at VAWNYHS facilities:

  • Veterans MUST HAVE AN APPOINTMENT to enter a VA facility, with the exception of entering the Emergency Department at the Buffalo site. Upon entry, a badge will be provided. This ID badge must be worn while in the facility and is good for that day only.
  • Veterans arriving at the Buffalo site will be checked in to appointments at the Bailey Avenue and Lebrun Road entrance. Check-in will include providing a contact number the patient can be reached that day. Patients will be asked to park and wait in their vehicle until the clinic calls them to be seen.
  • Visitation to patients will continue to be suspended as a precautionary measure in all VA Western New York Healthcare System facilities.  Adult caregivers may attend appointments with Veterans only if they need assistance.
  • Face masks: Please do not wear gaiters, cloth masks, or masks with exhalation valves. Veterans should wear hospital quality masks. If a Veteran does not have one, it will be provided upon entry.
  • To minimize any potential exposure, access continues to be limited to the outpatient entrances in Buffalo, Batavia and our VA Clinics for Veterans where screening questions will be asked.
  • COVID-19 testing is currently available outside in our parking garage area of the Buffalo facility, by appointment only.
  • Video telehealth and telephone visits, along with My HealtheVet Secure Messages, will continue to be offered as treatment options.
  • Hearing aid repairs are available without an appointment, Monday through Friday, from 8am-2:30pm.

You may be tested for COVID-19 before your appointment if you are going to have a procedure or for other medical reasons.

Flu shots are also available for enrolled Veterans. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, please make a scheduled appointment through one of our primary care clinics at VA Buffalo or VA Batavia Medical Centers, or through one of our seven VA clinics located at Niagara Falls, Lockport, West Seneca, Springville, Dunkirk, Jamestown, or Olean, New York.
