The TeleMOVE! Program has a team of experts that help Veterans stay on track with their weight loss goals throughout the year without leaving home.  This virtual program allows Veterans to get their care over the telephone and/or with a home telehealth device free of charge.   Whether you choose Home Telehealth Weight Management, MOVE! Telephone Lifestyle Coaching or MOVE! Support Calls, you’ll stay on track to reach your goal weight.   Marine Veteran Jeffery Angelo and Air Force Veterans Edwin Carmer and John Oberg have successfully achieved their goals of losing weight through the TeleMOVE! program.

Jeffery Angelo, 38, served in the Marine Corps from 1996 to 1998.  His military career was cut short by an injury that eventually contributed to his weight gain.  “My problem was medical, I broke my foot in the Marine Corps,” said Angelo. “I couldn’t walk or run and the next thing I knew I was 270 pounds.”  After receiving medical treatment for his injury, Angelo started his journey to lose weight. “I tried weight loss pills, Atkins Diet, Slim Fast and a variety of other programs.  There were no other alternatives that were no cost and TeleMOVE! was it, so I did it.”   On January 25, 2013, Angelo signed up with the TeleMOVE! program and began to make changes in his lifestyle.  He hired a personal trainer and followed weight loss and nutritional guidelines from the Telehealth Buddy to create his own daily routine.  Since then, Angelo lost 32 pounds and has picked up healthier habits to keep the weight off.  “The program brings you back to reality on how you’re supposed to eat properly. It’s so basic because you do it every day and form new healthier habits.” The TeleMOVE! program also helped him quit chewing tobacco in February 2013 because after eating healthy, he wanted to adopt other good health habits.

World War II Air Force Veteran, Edwin Carmer, 88, from Tonawanda shows that you are never too old to start healthy habits.  At 209 pounds, Carmer was referred to the TeleMOVE! program at his check-up with his primary care doctor.  On March 22, 2013, Carmer joined the TeleMOVE! program.  “It taught me the various food[s] that are beneficial and the ones that are not. It did help a lot in that sense,” explains Carmer.  With self-determination, Carmer used the VA’s program as an aid to take off over 30 pounds and maintain his weight.  “It gives you good direction on what to do for the day.  It concentrates on the food.  It was a big help.”  Now Carmer is able to take care of his lawn, use a snow blower on the driveway, and occasionally dance with his wife.  “My daily activities take me about a mile and a half per day.” 

Vietnam Veteran, John Oberg, 67, has struggled with his weight for years.  A never ending rollercoaster of weight loss and gains, Oberg had tried popular weight loss trends but got tiresome with the routine.  About three years ago, Oberg’s doctor at the VA Jamestown Community Outpatient Clinic recommended the TeleMOVE! program to help Oberg with his weight.  With the help of his wife and monthly calls from TeleMOVE! experts, Oberg was able to lose 55 pounds and six inches off his waist.  “What worked best for me was portion size and eating right,” says Oberg.  Once a month, a VA TeleMOVE! expert would call to give him small goals to accomplish moving him into a healthier lifestyle.  “Finding some goals to work toward like having a glass of water before every meal, eating vegetables, and then protein.  Also, having the scale (electronic) hooked up to the telephone was helpful,” explained Oberg.  With the physical restrictions of Parkinson’s disease, VA’s TeleMOVE! program helps Oberg move toward his bigger goal to get out and walk.  Oberg’s advice for other Veterans looking for help to lose or maintain their weight, “don’t give up. Keep at it and smile!  Accept the help that is offered to you, don’t push it off.”
