Veterans took the ice at the Riverside Bud Bakewell ice rink Sunday, October 23.  VA Western New York Healthcare System offered Veterans of all abilities a new recreation therapy activity in partnership with USA Sled Hockey, Hasek’s Heroes and the Buffalo Sabres.

Twelve Veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn, Persian Gulf and Vietnam Era participated in the first sled hockey clinic.  Volunteers assisted Veterans with equipment and then they took the ice.  The workout was exhilarating and grins were from ear to ear.  Members of the USA Sled hockey Paralympics’ team were on hand to show participants how to maneuver on the ice.

Additional clinics will be scheduled to get more Veterans interested in the sport and build both Veteran sled and stand up hockey teams.  Veterans that participated in Sunday’s event are invited to attend a NHL Buffalo Sabres hockey practice, meet the team and watch the Sabres play their game that night against the Ottawa Senators in Thomas Vanek’s suite on Friday, November 11, Veterans Day.  More pictures are available on facebook.
