In 1999 Jake Hipps, a Vietnam era Veteran, participated in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Puerto Rico. From there he went on to help train at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Aspen, Colorado and more recently he's been working at Buffalo's elite West Side Rowing Club, canoeing in their Adaptive Rowing Program.  In 2012, Jake won the national kayaking championship held in Green Bay, Wisconsin. At this year's 35th Wheelchair Games held in Dallas, Texas from June 21 -26, he won gold medals in the senior division shotput and javelin events, and took a bronze medal in the 10 kilometer hand cycle competition.  Jake's athletic achievements have gotten him on the cover of Cheerios cereal box, Veterans' Wellness magazine and the National Kayaking magazine. Jake encourages other disabled Veterans to stay active and if they can to try and compete.

Jake also stays active working as a medical clerk and volunteer at the Buffalo VA Medical Center.

If you are an enrolled Veteran interested in competing a good place to start is with the National Veterans competitions by contacting Pam Kaznowski at (716) 862-6814.
