New USS Little Rock Crew visits Veteran Patients
United States Navy Sailors from the new USS Little Rock - Littoral Combat Ship (LCS - 9) made special visits to Veteran patients at VA Western New York Healthcare System’s Buffalo and Batavia VA Medical Centers on Saturday morning, December 9, 2017. Little Rock Sailors are in Buffalo, New York, to participate in commissioning week activities and events, culminating in the commissioning ceremony of the new USS Little Rock alongside it namesake and decommissioned old USS Little Rock (CLG - 4), a light cruiser, on Saturday, December 16, 2017. The ceremony will mark the first time in the 242-year history of the U.S. Navy where ships of the same name will be commissioned next to each other.
Ten Sailors arrived at each medical campus site and made goodwill tour patient visits as part of several scheduled days of crew and community celebrations, public relations tours, and receptions for commissioning process of the new USS Little Rock at Buffalo Canalside and the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park. Once commissioning ceremonies are over, the new USS Little Rock (LCS – 9) will make its way to its permanent home port at Naval Station Mayport, near Jacksonville, Florida.
From the patient tour, it was evident that special bonds were created between the Veterans and Sailors. Veteran patients truly appreciated the great opportunity to meet and share their stories with America’s finest Sailors, bringing past, present, and future U.S. military servicemen and women together to honor their service and sacrifice to the Nation.
