VA Western New York Healthcare System
Kids Korner Open
VA Western New York Health Care System’s Kids Korner received assurance that the program will continue to serve Veterans and their family members childcare needs for another year. Kids Korner, a pilot program that provides free child care to Veterans attending scheduled appointments at the medical center since October 2011, is the first of four pilot programs that opened in the Nation. Others are located in Puget Sound, Northport and Dallas. Since Kids Korner has been in operation, 1,397 children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old have used the service allowing 3,758 appointments to be accessed by Veterans to meet their health care needs.
Local Veterans voiced their concerns when the pilot was expected to end on September 30 to local Congressman Brian Higgins. Legislation was passed with the President signing the Extending Veterans Expiring Authorities Act last week, allowing this valuable service to continue.
Veterans from all eras access the service bringing their children and grandchildren in while they receive health care.
