VA Western New York Healthcare System hosted a health equity workshop subtitled “Weaving the Tapestry of Care” on April 24, 2018, at Buffalo VA Medical Center’s Freedom Hall. The highly anticipated workshop brought over 75 National and local clinicians and patient advocates together to discuss and share information with the goal of addressing and correcting health care disparities within the underserved populations of our society. Speaker presentations focused on ways to improve access to health care and delivery by viewing societal biases differently, through better patient cultural awareness approaches, and via other more enhanced methodologies of treatment. VA Western New York Health Care System’s Health Equity Committee, led by Dr. Ursuline Bankhead, facilitated the day long workshop. Panelist participants included Leslie Wiggins, Network Director for VISN 7, VA Southeast Network, Uchenna Uchendu, MD, Chief Officer, Office of Health Equity, VA Central Office, Washington D.C., and Wendell Jones, MD, Chief Medical Officer, VISN 17, VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network.
