100 Veterans Attend Employment and Education Fair
Over 100 Veterans from multiple eras attended the second annual “Hire a Hero” employment and education fair on Saturday, March 23 at VA Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo. The seventeen employers that included federal agencies, privately owned, and Veteran owned businesses had 582 positions available for the men and women who attended the event.
Veteran participants also had the opportunity to meet with Veteran college representatives from Buffalo State College, Canisius College, Daemen College, Erie Community College, Niagara University, and University of Phoenix to learn about educational support for Veterans.
Human resource specialist Jim Leehan provided workshops about USA Jobs explaining how to set up an account and apply for federal jobs. The workshop explained the federal application and hiring process and helped Veterans identify their military skills and apply them to skills needed in the workforce. VA health care representatives were on hand to provide information about VA health programs such as enrolling for VA care, Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn services, Vocational Rehabilitation, My HealtheVet, VA’s online personal health record and availability of the Skills Center in room 309A which includes computers and personal assistance Monday through Friday to help Veterans with computer and other job enhancing skills.
