AMVETS Golden Age Games Donation
AMVETS New York State Service Foundation presented a donation of $10,000 to the 2013 National Veterans Golden Age Games on Monday, July 16 in Veterans Park at VA Western New York Healthcare System. Among those in attendance were Veteran athletes, local VA and community leadership and AMVETS representatives. "We're very excited about bringing 800+ Veterans to Western New York for the Golden Age Games," Mark Francis, voluntary manager said.
AMVETS is the first Veterans Service Organization to come forth with sponsorship of the Buffalo Games that will take place May 30-June 4, 2013. The National Veterans Golden Age Games are one of the most progressive and adaptive rehabilitative senior sports programs in the world. Military Veterans 55 and older who receive health care at any VA medical facility are eligible to compete in the Games. Sponsorship support from businesses, service organizations and the community is needed to carry out a successful event.
"I’d like to see many of the Veterans’ organizations make a donation," Frank DeMarco, president of the New York State AMVETS Service Foundation said. "Every little bit counts. With this donation, we hope the athletes do well." Events include swimming, cycling, gold, horseshoes, bowling, shot put, discus, croquet, dominoes, air rifle, nine-ball and table tennis along with sled hockey, 2013’s exhibition sport. "AMVETS has laid down the gauntlet for other organizations with this donation," Dr. Patrick Welch said. Help Hospitalized Veterans, Veterans Canteen Service and the Department of Veterans Affairs are also supporting this event.
